The "Remarkable" mountains provide a grand backdrop behind The Garden Peninsula in Lake Whakatipu for the world famous TSS Earnslaw (TSS - Twin Screw Steamer). TSS Earnslaw is a coal fired steam ship sailing the lake since 1912. She was pre-fabricated in Dunedin, dismantled and transported by rail for assembly at Kingston, to be launched 24/02/1912. For many years she received the farming stations around the lake, linked Queenstown with the southern railway at Kingston and, of course, transported many tourists to the mountain tracks, especially at the top of the lake. This has been the predominant trade in more recent years and should continue to be so for this 90 year old, "Grand Lady of the Lake".
