Few storybook characters are as recognizable and beloved as the redhead brother and sister dolls, Raggedy Ann and Andy.
Raggedy Ann came to life more then 85 years ago, when gifted artist and writer Johnny Gruelle (1880 - 1938) created fanciful stories to cheer his ailing daughter, Marcella. Little did this newspaper cartoonist and magazine illustrator know that this creation would become both the star of best selling books and a best loved doll for the entire country.
In 1918, Raggedy Ann's brother, Raggedy Andy, was created to join her on her magical adventures. Together, the siblings have become inextricably ingrained in American popular culture. With over 50 million Raggedy Ann and Andy products sold worldwide, they boast a popularity that spans nine decades.
Johnny Gruelle wrote and illustrated more than 40 Raggedy Ann and Andy books, including the popular Raggedy Ann Stories, Raggedy Andy Stories and Marcella: A Raggedy Ann Story, which serves as a tribute to his daughter's memory.
